Our Mission

We use law to save biodiversity.

Nature is under threat. Illegal wildlife trade, deforestation, mining, habitat loss and the climate crisis are all driving unprecedented biodiversity loss on a global scale.

Our network of lawyers, conservation scientists and activists aims to identify and implement effective legal responses to hold environmental offenders liable for remedying the harm they cause, using existing yet underused laws that enable courts to order offenders to take meaningful restorative action.

Our precedent-setting cases heal nature and injured communities, demand accountability, create deterrence, and inform policy and societal norms in ways that go beyond traditional enforcement. Such cases are legally possible – but still rare – in most countries. We are leading on this new legal approach to help law better work for nature, and to drive sectoral change for a happier, healthier environment.

  • Meaningful remedies restore the actual harm done to nature

  • Remedies are expensive - creating an effective deterrent against future offenders.

  • Effective legal action creates empowerment for nature, driving sectoral and societal change for a happier, healthier environment.

How we do it

  • Leading Specialised Legal Analyses

We work with lawyers to understand how litigation can be brought in each country. We also convene technical expert groups to understand legal nuances, loopholes and opportunities.

  • Supporting Strategic Litigation Cases Globally

We work with government and NGO partners, to identify strategic cases, and then to safely develop and fund robust, science-informed, meaningful cases that help protect biodiversity and set new legal precedents.

  • Training and Empowering Others to Litigate

We provide training, resources, and 1-to-1 support for prosecutors, judges, government, NGOs and communities — so they can better understand liability laws and remedies, and are empowered to exercise their legal rights.

Strategic litigation drives change

Strategic litigation has been instrumental in the fights for civil and human, including women’s, reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. It has shifted both legislation and social norms. Litigation has also been key to improving public health, including over smoking and the opioid crisis, shifting public perceptions, changing corporate behaviours.

It’s time to apply this approach for Biodiversity.
